1 Division Emerges Winner in Nigerian Army Inter Formations Combat Sports and Swimming Championship 2023

Kaduna, Nigeria – In a display of exceptional athleticism and competitive spirit, 1 Division Nigerian Army has emerged as the resounding victor of the inaugural Nigerian Army Inter Formations Combat Sports and Swimming Championship 2023. The weeklong event, held at the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy Sports Complex in Rabidu Cantonment, Kaduna, from 23rd to 28th July 2022, witnessed participation from elite athletes representing various divisions and the Army Headquarters Garrison.

At the conclusion of the intense championship, Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 1 Division Nigerian Army, proudly announced that 1 Division Kaduna secured the top position on the medal table, claiming an impressive haul of eight gold and eight silver medals. Following closely behind was the Army Headquarters Garrison, securing six gold medals, while the valiant 81 Division secured the third position with four gold medals.

The fourth and fifth positions were earned by 6 Division and 2 Division, respectively, showcasing their prowess with one gold medal each. 3 Division claimed the sixth position, securing three silver medals, while 8 Division achieved the seventh position. The championship concluded with 82 Division securing the eighth position.

The highly skilled athletes showcased their abilities in a range of combat sports and swimming competitions, including boxing, wrestling, and combat swimming. The rigorous contests were a testament to the dedication and determination of the Nigerian Army in honing the physical prowess and combat readiness of its troops.

In his closing remarks, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Maj Gen TA Lagbaja, represented by the Commandant of Nigerian Defence Academy, Maj Gen JO Ochai, highlighted the significance of continuous training to overcome the nation’s security challenges effectively. He emphasized that the championship played a pivotal role in ensuring the troops’ preparedness for any situation.

Maj Gen TA Lagbaja expressed his admiration for the competitive spirit displayed throughout the championship, lauding the efforts of Chief of Training (Army), Maj Gen SG Mohammed, for organizing the successful event. The COAS also commended the unwavering dedication of Acting Director Physical Training, Brig Gen AR Bello, and the instructors for their role in raising the fitness standards within the Nigerian Army.

Addressing the participants, the COAS congratulated them on their remarkable performances and exemplary discipline during the championship. He stressed that the lessons learned from the event would be shared with all formations to enhance their future performances and operational conduct.

Recognizing the nature of any competition, Maj Gen TA Lagbaja congratulated the winners and urged them to exhibit magnanimity in their victory. He encouraged the other formations that didn’t clinch the top spots to use the experience as motivation to excel in future championships.

In conclusion, the COAS extended his gratitude to the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his unwavering support and encouragement to the Nigerian Army. The successful championship underscored the Nigerian Army’s commitment to fostering camaraderie, sportsmanship, and exceptional physical fitness among its personnel in service to the nation.
