On Monday, July 3, 2023, Major General BA Alabi officially assumed command as the 41st General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 1 Division Nigerian Army and the Force Commander of Operation WHIRL PUNCH. The ceremony marked a significant moment in the Division’s history as it welcomed its new GOC.
Expressing his gratitude, Major General Alabi extended his appreciation to the almighty God and the Chief of Army Staff for entrusting him with the position of GOC 1 Division and Force Commander of Operation WHIRL PUNCH. He also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the formation commanders and principal staff officers of the Division, recognizing their efforts in the Division’s previous successes. With determination, he stated, “1 Division is the premier Division of the Nigerian Army, and we must always strive to be ahead.” He urged all officers and soldiers of the Division to redouble their efforts in order to overcome the prevailing security challenges within the Division’s Area of Responsibility.
The ceremony featured significant ceremonial activities, including the signing of handing and taking over notes, symbolizing the official transfer of command. Major General Alabi was then decorated with the 1 Division insignia, representing his new role and responsibilities. Additionally, a new Division flag was hoisted at the quarter guard, marking the commencement of a new era under Major General Alabi’s leadership. The event concluded with a group photograph, capturing the momentous occasion.
