On Saturday, January 18, 2024, at the Maimalari Cantonment, the Headquarters Theatre Command and 7 Division Nigerian Army celebrated the Combined West African Social Activities ( WASA ) for the end of the year 2024. The event highlighted the Nigerian Army’s cultural heritage and unwavering dedication to national security.
Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, represented by the Head of Service, Barrister Malam Fannami, commended the military’s efforts in combating terrorism and maintaining security in the region. He reaffirmed his administration’s steadfast support for the military, emphasizing that while the fight against insurgency is ongoing, significant progress has been made.
“It is our hope that in no time, the remnants of Boko Haram terrorism will be defeated, and we shall all witness the full restoration of peace to Borno State and the Northeast,” Governor Zulum stated. He acknowledged the decimation of hundreds of insurgents and the surrender of thousands of repentant Boko Haram members through a combination of kinetic and non-kinetic measures, while also honoring the sacrifices of troops who paid the supreme price in service to the nation.
In his welcome address, Major General Waidi Shaibu, Theatre Commander (TC) of Joint Task Force (JTF) North East (NE) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), described WASA as a tradition of cultural connection, heritage, and unity among soldiers. He highlighted its significance as a platform to celebrate the cultural diversity of the Army and reflect on the year’s achievements.
“Traditional rituals, including the burning of impetus, dancing, and masquerade displays, symbolize the cultural heritage of our troops and promote unity and morale,” General Shaibu explained. He also thanked the leadership of the Nigerian Army and the federal and state governments for their continued support.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division NA and Commander Sector 1 NE OPHK, Major General AGL Haruna, expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Shehu of Borno, and all dignitaries who contributed to the event’s success.
Highlights of the celebration included performances by the Zage cultural dancers, other traditional dance groups, masquerade displays, tug-of-war competitions, and the lighting of the bonfire. These activities showcased Nigeria’s rich ethnic diversity and the Army’s commitment to fostering camaraderie among personnel and their families.
Dignitaries at the event included Governor Zulum, represented by the Head of Service, Major General Waidi Shaibu, Major General KE Chigbu, Major General AGL Haruna, other military leaders, representatives of the Shehu of Borno, and officials from security agencies and the state government.
The 2024 WASA served as a testament to the Nigerian Army’s enduring role as a symbol of unity, discipline, and dedication to the security and cultural heritage of the nation.
