The Nigerian Army has dismissed as false and misleading an online publication alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over issues relating to salaries and allowances, describing the report as sensational and deliberately crafted to undermine public confidence and national security.
In a statement issued by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army said at no time has there been any threat of mutiny within its ranks. According to the statement, mutiny remains a grave offence under military law and is completely alien to the ethos, discipline and professionalism of Nigerian Army personnel.
Colonel Anele stressed that officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army remain loyal to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, noting that the allegations published by Sahara Reporters were based solely on anonymous and unverifiable claims circulated through non-official channels.
The Army explained that such narratives do not reflect the views or conduct of its personnel, who are trained to channel grievances through established military procedures rather than resorting to public platforms.
“For the avoidance of doubt,” the statement clarified, “promotion increments constitute only one component of military remuneration and should not be misrepresented as total earnings.” It noted that military pay includes consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational allowances, field and hardship allowances, as well as other entitlements that vary based on deployment, qualifications and assigned responsibilities.
The statement further highlighted that the Nigerian Army, working in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government authorities, continues to implement structured welfare reforms. These include periodic salary reviews, improved operational allowances, enhanced accommodation, better medical care, and comprehensive insurance packages for troops and their families. Issues relating to allowances, it added, are continuously reviewed within approved government frameworks.
Colonel Anele also disclosed that the Chief of Army Staff, upon assumption of duty, initiated positive engagements with appropriate authorities on troop welfare, engagements which are already yielding progressive outcomes.
Contrary to claims of neglect, the Army emphasized that the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has consistently demonstrated commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces, especially amid evolving security challenges.
Reaffirming its professionalism, the Nigerian Army stated that it remains a cohesive and disciplined force, fully focused on its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting internal security operations. It warned that attempts to portray the institution as unstable or lawless are irresponsible and detrimental to national security.
The Army urged members of the public to disregard unfounded reports and rely on official communication channels for accurate and credible information concerning the Armed Forces, particularly the Nigerian Army.
