During the opening ceremony of a three-day AFCSC Defence and Security Symposium with the theme “Imperative of a Military Industrial Complex for Effective CTCOIN Operations in Nigeria,” Air Vice Marshal Emmanuel Wonah, Commandant of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), made this statement. The event took place yesterday, April 27, 2023, in Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya Hall AFCSC in Jaji.
The focus of this year’s symposium, according to AVM Wonah during the event, is on the necessity for a thriving military industrial complex in order to succeed in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and other criminal elements, among others. This, he continued, guided the subject choice, which, given the present security challenges faced by the Armed Forces and other security agencies, was appropriate.
As a result, the Federal Government has launched numerous programs and initiatives over the years in the defence and security sectors that have been designed to increase professionalism to enable the Armed Forces to position themselves in the fight against terrorism and other Counter-Insurgency Operations. While the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the larger security sector have greatly benefited from training support, capacity development, and transformation as a result of the reforms.
He said that the current difficulties the Nigerian Armed Forces are facing, such as terrorism, insurgency, armed banditry, etc., have necessitated further changes or a review of the status quo, notably in the domain of the military industrial complex.
He claimed that as a result, the Armed Forces Command and Staff College is compelled to participate in the discussion. Therefore, he urged the moderators and discussants to conduct a thorough analysis of the papers that the students will present in order to add value and deepen the discussion on Imperatives of a Military Industrial Complex for Effective CTCOIN Operations in Nigeria.
Major General Hassan Tafida, the special guest of honor, said during his remarks that this year’s symposium will deepen students’ understanding of the value of a thriving military industrial complex that can be used to address national security concerns.
