Participants of Course 9/2025 from the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) have conducted an operational visit to the Headquarters 6 Division, Nigerian Army/Land Component, Joint Task Force (South South), Operation DELTA SAFE (OPDS), Port Harcourt.

The team, led by Brigadier General Ahmed Balogun, Director of Research, Development and Linkages, was received by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division and Land Component Commander (LCC) JTF SS OPDS, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah.

Welcoming the participants, Major General Emekah stressed the importance of the visit as an opportunity for the future strategic leaders to gain firsthand knowledge of the operational realities in the Niger Delta. He encouraged them to study the Land Component’s concept of operations critically and make recommendations that could further enhance mission effectiveness.

During the visit, the participants interacted with the Commander JTF SS OPDS, represented by Chief of Staff Brigadier General Umar Gital Yusuf, who briefed them on the operational disposition, challenges, and achievements of OPDS. They also received additional briefs from the Land, Maritime, and Air Components, which deepened their understanding of joint riverine operations.

As part of the field segment, the Commandant AWCN, Major General Umar Mohammed Alkali, led the team on a guided tour of selected creeks in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State under Sector 3 OPDS. They were received by the Commanding Officer, 103 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Waheed Shittu, who highlighted the dynamics of anti-oil theft operations and successes recorded by troops.

The creek tour provided participants with valuable insights into the peculiarities of operations in the Niger Delta Region, particularly the complexities of countering crude oil theft and maintaining security in difficult riverine terrain.

The visit ended with a vote of thanks by Colonel Philimon Malgwi, on behalf of the participants. He described the visit as “informative, insightful, and enlightening,” adding that the knowledge gained would support their training, wargaming exercises, and development of strategies to strengthen ongoing operations.
