According to reports, troops of 25 Task Force (TF) Brigade shot and killed a soldier who opened fire, killing at least one female humanitarian assistance worker and wounding a United Nations pilot in Borno State.

It was reported that the soldier, a member of Special Forces left his camp in the isolated Borno town of Damboa at around 3 p.m. on Thursday and then went on shooting with an Ak47 rifle on that day.

Zagazola Makama, a security analyst and counter-insurgency expert in Lake Chad, was informed by a United Nation source that the situation had prompted the non-governmental organization passengers waiting to board the helicopter returning to Maiduguri to flee for safety.

According to the sources, after using up all of his ammunition, the soldier pulled out a jack-knife and stabbed a female member of the Medecins-du-Monde (France) team working on the Nigeria mission, stabbed her four times, killed her before hurting the chopper pilot.

Before being shot to death to avert a worsening of the situation, the furious soldier turned once more and chased after his fellow soldiers. According to the sources, the pilot and crew have safely returned to Maiduguri, for treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital Maiduguri to stabilize the injured pilot.

Theater Command Operation Hadin Kai expressed remorse over the incident and calls for calm and urged the soldiers to continue their normal activities in their various military locations. The co-pilot of one of the UN helicopters was hurt by the same soldier who also killed another soldier. The rogue personnel were swiftly neutralized by the soldiers. The deceased’s bodies were sent to the 7 Division Hospital while the injured co-pilot was stabilized.

The exceedingly regrettable occurrence is the subject of a thorough investigation, and corrective measures have already been taken, according to the source.
