10 crew members of the fishing boat OLOKUN XII, which capsized in the early hours of November 7, 2022, within the Lagos channel, were saved by the Nigerian Navy ship BEECROFT on Monday.

When the fishing trawler OLOKUN XII collided with the merchant ship MSC CORUNA while being hauled by its sister trawler OLOKUN IV in the Lagos channel, the capsized trawler was OLOKUN XII.

Fortunately, NNS BEECROFT patrol team were on routine patrol, which resulted in the rapid rescue of 10 crew members from the trawler, according to Commander Edward Yeibo, naval spokesman in charge of Western Naval Command. The crew was then given to Barnaly Fishing Firm Limited officials by the company that saved them.

Commodore Malami Haruna, commander of the Nigerian Navy ship BEECROFT, used the occasion to urge seafarers to navigate cautiously and with due consideration for the international regulation for collision prevention when transiting within the nation’s maritime domain. He expressed his condolences to the Fishing Company for the tragic incident.

The commitment of Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, Chief of the Naval Staff, to guaranteeing the safety of all seafarers inside Nigeria’s maritime domain was also emphasized.
