The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified that the recent remarks by the Chief of Defence Staff ( CDS ), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, during a Channels Television interview on Thursday, 20 August 2025, have been deliberately misrepresented in some quarters.

In the interview, the CDS had encouraged Nigerians to acquire basic survival and self-protection skills, likening them to universally recognized life skills such as driving, swimming, taekwondo, judo, and boxing.

In a statement signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director Defence Information, the DHQ stressed that General Musa did not call for citizens to bear arms or engage in the unlawful possession of firearms.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the CDS is fully aware of Nigerian laws prohibiting unauthorized carrying of weapons. His message was intended to promote personal resilience, situational awareness and lawful preparedness—not to encourage illegal activity,” the statement read.

The DHQ further emphasized that the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies have continued to achieve notable successes in the fight against insecurity across the country. These milestones, it added, are proof of the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring stability.

Brig Gen Gusau reiterated that basic skills such as unarmed self-defence, swimming and driving remain valuable life skills that improve both individual preparedness and national resilience. He also urged Nigerians to verify information from credible sources and refrain from circulating distorted interpretations of official statements.

The statement concluded with an assurance that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolutely committed to the safety, peace and well-being of all Nigerians.
