In response to the security threat alert, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has given the Nigerian policemen and officers the responsibility of using the current security threat to review their approach to defending the populace.
Their readiness, in the president’s opinion, would also demonstrate their ability to guarantee a free and fair election in 2023.
In his speech at the police conference and retreat’s opening ceremony on Monday in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, Buhari urged the police to preserve their apolitical nature as the country prepared for the general election.
The President recognized that a great deal of effort had gone into the election and that nothing should be permitted to sabotage it. He stated that the police will be a key player in the election’s success.
For a legitimate election in 2023, he said, “the conference and retreat will allow to consider police as a key agency for the election.” The president added, “My administration will leave a legacy of free fair and transparent elections, and I remain steadfast to this pledge.” Buhari also reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring a legitimate election.
In addition, he pledged that his administration will continue the police force’s repositioning, notably in terms of its welfare.
