In a significant effort to foster stronger relationships and build confidence between the ECOWAS Stabilization Support Mission in Guinea Bissau (ESSMGB) and the host country, a route march was conducted within the Bissau metropolitan area by the Force Headquarters ESSMGB.

Led by the Force Commander, Brigadier General AM Grema, the monthly exercise witnessed massive participation from FHQ Staff Officers, troops from the four contingents, and the National Defence and Security Forces of the Republic of Guinea Bissau (NDSFGB).

The primary objective of the route march was twofold. Firstly, it aimed at maintaining the energy and spirit of the troops, fostering camaraderie, and enhancing their physical fitness. By engaging in such exercises, the personnel are better prepared for the challenges they may face during their mission in supporting the NDSFGB in stabilizing the Republic of Guinea Bissau.

Secondly, the route march served as a means to build confidence and reinforce the commitment of the troops in pursuing the mission mandates laid out by ESSMGB. These mandates include supporting the NDSFGB in their efforts to maintain stability within the country, protecting civilians, and improving the security capacity of the region in accordance with international humanitarian law.

By conducting joint exercises with the National Defence and Security Forces of Guinea Bissau, the ESSMGB demonstrates its commitment to working collaboratively with the host country’s security forces. Such interactions help foster mutual trust, understanding, and cooperation, all of which are crucial in achieving the mission’s goals effectively.

The participation of troops from the four contingents in the route march further reinforces the united front and commitment of the ESSMGB in its mission to ensure peace, stability, and security in Guinea Bissau. The collective effort of all contingents, along with the support of the host country’s security forces, strengthens the mission’s capacity to address challenges and fulfill its objectives.

As the ESSMGB continues its mission in Guinea Bissau, these proactive measures, including route marches and joint exercises, play a vital role in maintaining the readiness and effectiveness of the peacekeeping forces. The commitment to fostering strong relationships with the host country and working together with the local security forces reaffirms ECOWAS’ dedication to promoting peace and stability in the region.

The route march serves as a symbol of the shared commitment and determination of the ESSMGB and NDSFGB in their mission to create a safe and secure environment for the people of Guinea Bissau, as they strive for lasting peace and progress in the nation.
