On Friday, April 14, 2023, Maj Gen OT Akinjobi, the newly appointed General Officer Commanding 1 Division Nigerian Army and Force Commander Operation Whirl Punch, gained command as the division’s 40th general officer Commanding.
Gen Akinjobi praised his predecessor in his maiden speech, calling him a qualified infantry general, a seasoned combatant, and someone who has made the Nigerian Army proud in a number of theaters of operations around the nation. He stated, “I am very proud of you, indeed the Nigerian Army is proud of you,” adding that the Division will be depending on General Lagbaja for a variety of support when he reports to Army Headquarters as the Chief of Operations.
The previous GOC, Maj Gen TA Lagbaja, praised the new GOC as an experienced senior officer who well comprehends the 1 Division Area of Responsibility and who is expected to succeed as GOC earlier in his remarks. He gave the new GOC his full support and cooperation and instructed all commanders and men in the Division to do the same. He expressed gratitude to the Supreme Being and the Chief of Army Staff for the opportunity to lead GOC 1 Division. He also expressed his gratitude to the major staff officers and formation commanders for their significant contributions to his successful tour of duty.
All officers and soldiers received the same gratitude from General Lagbaja for their assistance, labor, commitment, and fortitude. He orders them to support the new GOC with the same fervor.
The signing of handing over and taking over notes, presenting the Division flag to the new GOC, decorating the incoming GOC with the 1 Division Insignia, giving the outgoing GOC souvenirs, taking a group photo, hoisting off the new Division’s flag, and the outgoing GOC’s final inspection of quarter guard were the highlights of the event.
