In a formal ceremony held at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, Major General TA Lagbaja assumed command as the 23rd Chief of Army Staff (COAS), marking the beginning of a new leadership era for the Nigerian Army (NA).

During the handing and taking over ceremony, Major General Lagbaja expressed his commitment to transforming the NA into a more professional, proficient, and admirable army. Drawing on his extensive experience in various commands and NA formations, he pledged to apply his expertise diligently and effectively in carrying out his duties as the Army Chief.

The incoming COAS commended his predecessor, Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya, for the remarkable transformation achieved under his leadership. He acknowledged the procurement of logistics, the welfare of personnel, the training and retraining of troops, as well as the significant progress made in the fight against insecurity, which resulted in the surrender of terrorists in the North East and other achievements in various theaters of operations.

Major General Lagbaja emphasized that under his leadership, fairness, merit, and hard work would be rewarded, while decisive measures would be taken against any personnel who violated rules and regulations to serve as a deterrent to others. He expressed gratitude to President Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment and pledged to build upon the gains made by his predecessors.

In his valedictory remarks, Lieutenant General Yahaya expressed his satisfaction with the accomplishments of the NA during his tenure, despite the complex and volatile nature of the security challenges faced. He commended the commitment and dedication of the personnel, highlighting the collaboration and joint efforts among the Services, paramilitary agencies, and other stakeholders in addressing security challenges.

Lt Gen Yahaya noted the successes achieved in countering terrorism, neutralizing bandits, and recovering arms and ammunition. He also mentioned the NA’s efforts in combating illegal oil bunkering in the South-South region, leading to increased crude oil production and positioning Nigeria as a top oil producer in Africa.

The outgoing COAS congratulated Major General Lagbaja on his appointment and expressed confidence in his leadership capabilities. He urged the personnel to extend their support to the new Army Chief, emphasizing the importance of remaining committed and dedicated to eradicating threats and criminal activities.

The ceremony concluded with the symbolic handing over of insignia to the new COAS, as well as the lowering and hoisting of the flag, symbolizing the transition of command from Lieutenant General Yahaya to Major General Lagbaja. The Nigerian Army looks forward to the leadership and direction of its new Chief as it continues its efforts to ensure peace, security, and stability within the nation.
