Under Brigadier-General Aminu Umar’s leadership, the Nigerian Army’s Guards Brigade arranged an Inter-Units Cultural Dance Competition to tap into the hidden talents and cultural legacy of soldiers’ children and wards in the Guards Brigade Barracks Area of Responsibility. The event, which took place on June 6, 2023, was intended to train the Brigade for upcoming national celebrations and highlight the variety of Nigeria’s cultural history.

Colonel Peter Oyegoke, Brigade Chief of Staff (COS), spoke on behalf of the Commander and underlined the value of fostering the barracks community and fostering togetherness via cultural expression. He said that because the community embodies the various tribes and cultures of Nigeria, it serves as a perfect platform for showcasing the nation’s rich cultural diversity.

Five distinct cultural troupes from Brigade units competed in the event, each of which was a major ethnic group in Nigeria. the 102 Guards Battalion from Suleja, the 177 Guards Battalion from Keffi, the 176 Guards Battalion from Gwagwalada, and the Guards Brigade Garrison from Asokoro were among the participating forces. The cultural groups displayed customary dances, attire, and music that represented the distinctive cultural legacy of their individual ethnic groups.

The performances were evaluated and the winners were chosen by a panel of judges from the Ministry of Information and Culture. The Commander commended each competitor for their remarkable exhibition of cultural heritage and thanked the judges for their commitment to the competition.

Officers, employees, and their families attended the tournament together with the commanding officers of the Brigade’s subordinate units. As families and other soldiers supported the competitors, the mood was one of excitement and togetherness. At the competition’s end, the Guards Brigade Garrison took first prize, followed by the 7 Guards Battalion in second. The third, fourth, and fifth spots were won by the 177, 176, and 102 Guards Battalions, respectively.

Deserving winners received gifts and souvenirs as a thank you for their outstanding efforts. The occasion not only highlighted the Guards Brigade’s unique diversity in culture but also promoted cooperation and fraternity among the troops and their families.

The Inter-Units Cultural Dance Competition showcased the Nigerian Army’s Guards Brigade’s dedication to fostering cultural heritage and honoring the variety of backgrounds among its members. The Brigade hopes that through holding these kinds of activities, the barracks community would become closer together. It also hopes to get its soldiers ready for upcoming national occasions where they will proudly represent Nigeria’s diversity and unity.
