Abuja, Nigeria – The Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has taken a significant step towards motivating and encouraging police officers by ordering the resuscitation of the Awards and Commendation system for the Nigeria Police Force. This new system, implemented under his administration, will recognize the collective efforts of all officers involved in major cases, marking a departure from the past focus solely on arresting officers or commanders.

The reintroduction of the commendation and award system aligns with the provisions of Section 92 of the Police Act 2020 and Order 68 of the Force Orders and Instructions. The move aims to enhance motivation and foster a sense of camaraderie, unity, and teamwork among police officers. In the past, the force bestowed commendations and rewards on specific officers for exceptional performances in critical operations. However, the new system will extend recognition to all officers who played a crucial role in resolving major cases, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility in achieving the force’s objectives.

CSP Oumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, explained that the new system also marks a departure from unnecessary special promotions that have sometimes lacked merit. Instead, the focus will be on recognizing and rewarding officers’ exceptional dedication and performance through commendations and awards. The IGP aims to instill a renewed sense of pride and dedication among police officers, as their hard work and dedication will be acknowledged and celebrated appropriately.

As part of this initiative, the IGP has set in motion plans to organize the Nigeria Police Awards Night annually. This prestigious event will honor outstanding police personnel from various sectors and individuals who have contributed to the successful policing system in Nigeria. The Nigeria Police Awards Night for 2023 will be unveiled and announced at the appropriate time.

The Inspector-General of Police recognizes the need to revamp the commendation and award system within the Nigeria Police Force. By creating a culture of appreciation, teamwork, and professional growth, the new system will contribute to a more cohesive and motivated Police Force. With the acknowledgement of the contributions of all officers involved in major cases, the force aims to uphold the principles and tenets of the Police Act 2020, the Force Orders and Instructions, and serve the Nigerian people with excellence and renewed vigor.
