IGP Usman Alkali Baba, the inspector general of police, has advised the quick removal of ASP Drambi Vandi, the person tasked with overseeing the Ajah Divisional Headquarters of the Nigerian Police, while awaiting the full report on the incident. Barrister Omobolanle Raheem was shot and killed by the officer in Lagos State while performing his professional duties.
The officer’s proposal to be suspended, according to IGP Usman Baba, is also in line with the internal disciplinary processes followed by the Force. CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, said in a statement distributed to journalists in Abuja that the IGP also highlighted that the suspension is expected to foster an environment that will permit the appropriate legal procedures to enforce justice in the matter without hindrance.
Regarding the officer’s legal right to the presumption of innocence, the suspension is irrelevant. In the interim, the IGP reaffirmed the Force’s dedication to upholding the law and reassured the populace of his administration’s resolve to ensuring that justice is not only carried out but also plainly recognized as having been so in the eyes of the populace.
He, therefore, appeals to the general public to retain their composure, reassuring them that every effort is being made to ensure that justice is done while also taking measures to prevent future occurrences of the same type of events.
