In a significant blow to the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP), a notorious commander known as Kiriku has met his demise three days after being bitten by a venomous snake in the Sambisa Forest in Borno State.

According to reports, Kiriku sustained two snake bites from a highly venomous brown snake while hiding in Agikur Mosque in Damboa Local Government Area on Tuesday. Despite efforts to seek treatment, Kiriku tragically succumbed to the snakebite on June 23, 2023.

Zagazola Makama, a renowned Counter Insurgency Expert and Security Analyst in the Lake Chad region, explained that the remote location of ISWAP hideouts often hinders their accessibility to medical treatment. This lack of proper healthcare facilities likely contributed to the unfortunate outcome for Kiriku.

Kiriku was a prominent commander operating within the Jiddari axis of Chiralia in the Timbuktu triangle. Known for leading numerous attacks and ambushes against the troops of Operation Hadin Kai, he posed a significant threat in the region. His demise marks a notable setback for ISWAP and represents a victory for the ongoing efforts to combat insurgency in the area.

The death of Kiriku serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by terrorist groups operating in hostile environments. It also underscores the resilience and determination of the Nigerian security forces in their fight against terrorism.

The Nigerian authorities continue their commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region. Efforts are being made to neutralize terrorist elements and ensure the safety and well-being of the civilian population.

As the fight against terrorism continues, it is essential for citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the security forces. The collaboration between the military, security experts, and the public remains crucial in the ongoing efforts to defeat insurgency and restore lasting peace in Borno State and the wider region.
