The Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) has eliminated numerous Boko Haram militants in Borno State’s North East as part of a renewed clash between rival terrorist groups.

On June 23, a violent altercation took occurred along the route between Gajiganna and Gajiram. According to Zagazola Makama, a well-known security analyst and counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad area, the conflict started when a group of Boko Haram fighters riding motorcycles ambushed two ISWAP vehicles.

The attack set up a bloody conflict between the two groups, which claimed the lives of several Boko Haram terrorists. ISWAP also took possession of weapons belonging to the defeated Boko Haram fighters, including motorcycles and firearms.

It is noteworthy that eight farmers were just brutally murdered in the Mafa area by Boko Haram fighters. ISWAP’s destruction of them deals a serious blow to the Boko Haram insurgency in the area and is in retaliation for their barbaric attacks on defenseless civilians.

The clash between ISWAP and Boko Haram brings to light the rivalry and power struggle that the two extremist organizations are still engaged in. Despite having similar extremist ideologies, both groups fight for power and influence in the area. As they compete for resources, territory, and supremacy within the larger context of the insurgency, such conflicts are widespread.

The conflict highlights how complicated and unstable the North East’s security situation is. Despite efforts to quell the insurgency and bring about peace, there are still difficulties due to the existence of numerous extreme factions.

The Nigerian security services are still devoted to eliminating the threats posed by these radical organizations. In order to effectively combat terrorism, security agencies must cooperate, intelligence must be gathered, and local populations must be supported.

It is crucial to maintain vigilance and alert the security forces to any suspicious activity as the fight against insurgency progresses. In order to maintain the gains won and ultimately put an end to the threat of terrorism in the region, it is imperative that the military, security professionals, and the general public work together.
