Troops of 3 Division Nigerian Army/Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (JTF OPEP) have intensified their campaign to curb the proliferation of illegal arms in Plateau State, recovering a cache of weapons during a targeted operation in the early hours of 15 September 2025.

According to a statement by Major Samson Zhakom, Media Information Officer of JTF OPEP, the troops, acting on actionable intelligence, raided the hideout of a notorious gunrunner at Kurra Berom Village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area (LGA). During the operation, soldiers recovered one AK-47 rifle, two AK-47 magazines, and 38 rounds of 7.62 mm (Special) ammunition.

Major Zhakom revealed that the criminal elements fled the location shortly before the troops arrived, but assured that intensified pursuit operations are ongoing to apprehend the suspects. He emphasized that the operation underscores the resolve of 3 Division and JTF OPEP to eradicate gunrunning networks and deny criminals access to deadly weapons that threaten the peace and stability of Plateau and neighboring states.

He further stated, “Troops of 3 Division/JTF OPEP will continue to maintain an aggressive posture and exhibit unwavering determination to rid the Joint Operations Area of illegal arms and criminal activities, while ensuring the safety of law-abiding citizens.”

Security analysts note that the recovery of the AK-47 and ammunition is a significant success in the broader national effort to mop up illicit small arms and light weapons, which are often used by bandits, kidnappers, and other violent groups in the North Central region. The operation also reflects the Nigerian Army’s ongoing commitment to intelligence-driven operations, combining surveillance, community engagement, and rapid response to dismantle criminal networks.

Residents of Kurra Berom and surrounding communities have been urged to remain vigilant and provide credible information to security agencies to aid the capture of the fleeing suspects and sustain the momentum against arms trafficking.
