Surrendered to Troops

Four people believed to be fighters for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), including Abubakar Michael (30), Barkawu Isa (23), and Maina Maaji (32), as well as their families, which included two females and six children, have surrendered to the troops of 196 Amphibious Battalion. During a fighting patrol in Kwatan Turare, which is situated in the Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State and is northwest of Tumbun Abuja Ruwa Island, the surrender took place.

The choice to turn themselves in by these people and their families reveals a change in their loyalty and a wish to distance themselves from ISWAP’s operations. It also emphasizes the military’s operations’ rising success and the mounting pressure being put on extremist organizations in the area.

The Nigerian military has a chance to obtain useful intelligence and gain understanding of the workings and organizational structure of ISWAP through the surrender of these individuals. Additionally, it offers a chance for the former combatants and their families to be rehabilitated and reintegrated into society with the intention of promoting peace and stability in the impacted areas.

The people who have surrendered and their families have been brought into custody by the troops who are taking part in the operation. To facilitate their peaceful reintegration into society, they will go through the required procedures, including screening and profiling.

An important step in the fight against terrorism and the establishment of peace in the area has been made with the surrender of these alleged ISWAP members and their families. It highlights the success of military tactics in luring renegades and persuading people to abstain from using violence. The Nigerian government would continue to support and help people who choose to reject extremist ideology and follow a peaceful path in cooperation with pertinent agencies.
