Rear Admiral Ikechukwu Ogalla has assumed office as the Chief of Naval Staff, succeeding Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, who retired after over 35 years of service. The handover ceremony took place at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja on June 23.

Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla was born on December 20, 1968, in Enugu Ezike Igbo Eze North LGA, Enugu State, Nigeria. In his new commitments, he has pledged to intensify efforts to combat crude oil theft and illegal refining in Nigeria’s maritime domain.

Addressing the challenges ahead, Rear Admiral Ogalla emphasized the significance of maritime security for economic stability and national development. He expressed a firm commitment to tackle threats such as crude oil theft, illegal refineries, illegal fishing, piracy, sea robbery, trafficking, and other maritime crimes. He assured that efforts would be made to enhance capabilities, combat piracy and sea robbery, and ensure the safety of the maritime domain.

Rear Admiral Ogalla expressed gratitude to Vice Admiral Gambo and other former service chiefs for their contributions to curbing insecurity. He emphasized the need for unwavering commitment, resolve, and collective effort to navigate the challenges of maritime security successfully. With a focus on professionalism, innovation, teamwork, and a safe and secure maritime domain, he expressed confidence in transforming Nigeria’s maritime space for socio-economic activities.

During his farewell address, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo expressed confidence in his successor, stating that he is leaving the Navy in the hands of a capable Chief of Naval Staff. Vice Admiral Gambo highlighted the achievements made during his tenure, including efforts to address subversive activities in the maritime domain, combat piracy, crude oil theft, and improve operations, logistics, infrastructure, and collaboration with local and international partners.

Rear Admiral Ogalla called for the cooperation of all personnel in ensuring the success of the Nigerian Navy. He expressed confidence that with collective efforts and the motto “Onward Together,” they can overcome challenges and build a Navy that the nation can be proud of.
