Maiduguri, Nigeria – The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Super Tucano fighter jets conducted a series of airstrikes, resulting in the destruction of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) hideout-camps and the neutralization of 11 terrorists in the Lake Chad Tumbus axis of Borno State. The successful operation, carried out on July 15, 2023, was based on credible intelligence reports indicating the presence of terrorists in Kollaram and Arinna/Chiki camps.

Mr. Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, confirmed the airstrikes and revealed that approximately 11 terrorists, including one of their commanders, were killed in the region. Additionally, another group of terrorists attempting to flee in canoes in the Kirta-Wulgo axis of the state were also eliminated.

A military source in Maiduguri disclosed that the terrorists were targeted by airstrikes while attempting to cross the lake to regroup with their colleagues at Tumbun Rego. The source further revealed that the terrorists had planned to launch an attack on a military post in the region.

These airstrikes and subsequent successful operations have dealt a significant blow to ISWAP and their activities in the area. The Nigerian military’s continued efforts to eliminate terrorist threats and secure the region have demonstrated their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives and security of the nation’s citizens.

The military authorities have commended the Nigerian Air Force for their precise and effective airstrikes, which have disrupted terrorist operations and prevented potential attacks. The coordinated efforts of security forces and their ability to act on credible intelligence have proven crucial in maintaining peace and stability in Borno State and the surrounding areas.

The Nigerian military remains resolute in its fight against terrorism and will continue to employ all necessary measures to protect the country from the threat of insurgency. The recent successful airstrikes serve as a testament to the military’s determination to dismantle terrorist networks and create a safe environment for all Nigerians.
