In a severe setback for the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP), at least 82 fighters and their families perished while attempting to cross the River in the Damasak region of Borno State. Between June 2 and 3, 2023, military carried out heavy operations in the area, which forced the terrorists to retreat toward the Niger Republic.

The evacuating ISWAP members and their families, who were from the Lake Chad axis, tragically perished while trying to cross the river. Along the river tract that runs from Komadougou Yobe into Lake Chad to Niger, the occurrences occurred in a number of communities, including Bulama Modori, Kaneram, Dogomolu, and Jokka.

The terrorists reportedly wanted to leave the region because they were worried about being killed on the battlefield after learning about the nearby military operation that was still in progress. Terrorists were forced to evacuate by putting their lives in danger due to the resolute military’ raids.

Separately, at the firm base in Arege, which is situated in the Borno State region of Malam Fatori, ISWAP militants targeted reinforced forces with a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED). They were attacked as more troops were being added to the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) task force in Gerere and Arege to support it. Sadly, the attack resulted in the deaths of two soldiers.

The troops bravely withstood the onslaught and successfully retained their positions and equipment despite losing some of their fellow soldiers. At this point, it is unknown how many terrorists were actually killed, including the suicide bomber.

To prevent military intrusions into their strongholds, ISWAP has intensified its attacks by using VBIEDs and landmines. However, the Nigerian military, working with international forces, is unwavering in its pursuit to root out terrorists and bring about security and stability in the region.

The continuous threats posed by terrorist organizations in Nigeria’s North East are highlighted by these recent instances. However, the tenacity and bravery of the Nigerian military and its allies still help to ensure the nation and its people’s general safety.
