During the first-ever News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Annual International Lecture, which took place on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, General Christopher Musa, the CDS, gave a stirring speech about the increasing levels of instability in the Sahel region. Under the theme “Insecurity in the Sahel (2008-2024): Dissecting Nigeria’s Challenges – Genesis, Impacts, and Options,” eminent academics, diplomats, and security specialists convened to deliberate on Nigeria’s involvement in mitigating security issues in the region.
The Sahel’s instability may be traced back to problems like bad governance, economic marginalization, and the aftermath of Libya’s 2011 collapse, as noted by Gen. Musa in his goodwill message. The general also described the complicated challenges that Nigeria and its neighbors face. With the emergence of rebel groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, which have destroyed villages and displaced millions of people, he underlined the profound effects of these regional dynamics on Nigeria.
The Nigerian Armed Forces have worked with regional allies like the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to combat terrorism and stabilize the region. In spite of these challenges, Gen. Musa lauded Nigeria’s tenacity. But, he emphasized that military fixes are insufficient on their own and advocated for a multifaceted strategy that takes into account political and socioeconomic problems.
Through his plea for governments, civil society, and international partners to collaborate in identifying sustainable solutions, Gen. Musa emphasized the significance of international cooperation in tackling insecurity in the Sahel. A major step toward fostering greater regional collaboration and awareness of the security issues still plaguing Nigeria and the larger Sahel region was taken with the forum.
The demand for coordinated action to advance peace, stability, and prosperity throughout Africa marked the conclusion of the address.
