To improve legal frameworks and operational standards within the force, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) collaborated to hold a two-day training on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. Human rights-based policing techniques that are successful, efficient, and long-lasting are the main emphasis of the event, which is being conducted at the Bolton White Hotel in Abuja.

Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, was represented by Deputy Inspector General of Police Alabi Abiodun Sylvester, who inaugurated the programme. This event is a testament to the NPF’s resolve to restructure its law enforcement strategy and foster a society that upholds human rights and the rule of law.

The training, according to Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, is intended to give officers from the Legal Department and the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) the necessary tools to properly manage cases involving gender issues and human rights. “This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that all police operations are conducted with integrity, transparency, and respect for human rights,” added ACP Adejobi.

A further focus of the initiative is the enhancement of the Nigeria Police’s supervision and accountability systems. The program intends to improve police operations by promoting conversations about issues and best practices, so that officers can serve the public with integrity and professionalism.

For their assistance and collaboration in putting together this essential training program, IGP Egbetokun extended his thanks to the UNODC. The community it serves has to trust and respect the police department, and he emphasized that this collaboration is a critical first step in that direction.

“This workshop represents a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to ensure a well-trained, accountable, and human rights-oriented police force,” added IGP Egbetokun. Maintaining public confidence and successfully resolving security concerns in Nigeria depend on constant learning and adaptation to global policing norms, he said.

In order to improve the NPF’s overall service delivery and dedication to preserving the rule of law and human rights, the workshop is anticipated to end with practical solutions that CRU officers can apply throughout numerous commands national.
