Diffa, Niger – In a significant operation, elements of the Nigerien National Guard (GNN) intercepted a white Hilux vehicle on Friday, July 14, 2023, near the village of Ouragou. The vehicle was carrying two individuals, suspected to be involved in smuggling weapons destined for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

As the GNN elements pursued the suspects, the pursuit spanned over 30 kilometers, leading to the suspects abandoning their vehicle due to a flat tire northeast of Ndjariho. Undeterred, the GNN continued their determined pursuit on foot, eventually apprehending the first person approximately 2 kilometers from Ndjariho. The second person was captured after a 20-kilometer chase towards the village of Barram Moussa.

Upon searching the intercepted Hilux vehicle, the GNN discovered a substantial cache of ammunition. The vehicle contained 1 box of 1,400 cartridges of 7.62x39mm, 19 cartridges in each of 700 cartridges, 6 medium packs consisting of 100 cartridges each of 7.62x39mm, and 58 small packs of 20 cartridges each of 7.62x39mm. In total, the seizure amounted to 6,970 cartridges of 7.62x39mm, stored in bags totaling 23,430 cartridges.

The interception of these weapons destined for ISWAP is a significant achievement in the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and ensure regional security. The Nigerien National Guard’s swift and determined action demonstrates their commitment to preventing illicit arms trafficking and disrupting the activities of extremist groups.

The authorities are conducting further investigations to gather intelligence on the origin and intended destination of the seized weapons. It is crucial to dismantle the networks involved in arms smuggling to weaken the capabilities of terrorist organizations such as ISWAP and safeguard the peace and stability of the region.

The Nigerien government commends the efforts of the GNN and other security agencies involved in this successful operation. Their dedication and vigilance play a vital role in countering the threat of terrorism and maintaining the safety of Niger’s citizens.

The fight against terrorism requires continued cooperation between national and international security forces. Niger will continue to work closely with regional partners and the global community to address the challenges posed by terrorist organizations, ensuring a secure environment for all its inhabitants.
