On May 21, 2023, in Abyei, the Pakistani Battalion (PAKBATT) 1 was awarded UN peacekeeping medals in appreciation for their excellent contribution to the Abyei community while serving with the United Nations Interim Force for Abyei (UNISFA). Speaking to the peacekeepers , UNISFA Acting Head of Mission/Force Commander Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr praised the officers and soldiers of the Pakistani Battalion for their steadfast commitment to UNISFA despite the risks and difficulties posed by the local climate in Abyei Box.
In addition, General Sawyerr praised the Pakistani contingent commander, Lt. Col. Abdul Manan, and his battalion for their professionalism and dedication in carrying out UNISFA’s mandate and for establishing peace and security in their assigned region.
He added that even during the period when your battalion was lacking the full complement of its strength and COE, your resourcefulness ensured your troops performed effectively and wholeheartedly. He said the feat could not have been accomplished without your dynamic leadership qualities along with the tenacity and tenacity of an equally motivated and well-trained troop under your command.
The Assistant Head of Mission praised the Battalion for its ability to control and mediate a riotous situation in the Diffra oil field, stop the illegal trafficking of weapons in the Abyei Box, and engage in innovative CIMIC activities that helped win the locals’ support for UNISFA.
Lt Col Abdul Manan, the commander of the Pakistani UNISFA battalion, thanked the force commander and assistant head of mission for their excellent leadership and for allowing him the chance to help carry out the mission’s objectives. The prized regimental color of the Battalion was delivered to the acting head of mission and force commander. Col. Manan believes that giving the Regimental Colour to a senior officer who guided the mission with such exemplary leadership and mentorship is the best present he and his entire unit can provide.
General Sawyer claimed that the color was a precious gift that he will always treasure. The Deputy Force Commander, Brig. Gen. Abu Syed Mohammod Bakir, Senior Management Leaders of UNISFA, Sector Commanders, Force Headquarters staff officers, Contingent Commanders, Military and Police officials, and others were present during the Medal Parade.
