Innocent Okolo, the Commandant of the Nigerian Peace Corps (PCN), Anambra State, has praised the National Assembly (NASS) for striving to have the Nigeria Peace Corps Bill delivered to President Buhari for approval.
After the establishment of a conference committee to harmonize the Senate and House of Representatives findings, the National Assembly put the wheels in motion for forwarding the Bill requesting an Act to establish the Nigeria Peace Corps to President Muhammadu Buhari.
In order to synchronize and generate a clean copy of the Peace Corps Bill for submission to President Muhammadu Buhari for approval, the House of Representatives took the initiative and established a six-member conference committee.
The conference committee members were meant to check out for anomalies and harmonise them before sending the clean copy of the Peace Corps Bill to the Presidency, Commandant Okolo revealed in response to the occurrence in Awka, Anambra State.
He expressed hope that the harmonisation process would be finished before the lawmakers left for their campaign break, which would hasten the president’s approval of the peace corps bill.
The Nigerian Peace Corps Bill aims to create the Nigerian Peace Corps, an organization tasked with fostering peace, volunteering, community service, neighborhood watch, and nation-building while also developing, empowering, and giving adolescents gainful work opportunities.
After receiving President Buhari’s assent, the Peace Corps Bill would formally establish Nigeria’s Peace Corps.
The Peace Corps of Nigeria currently has offices in the 36 Federation States and the Federal Capital Territory.
It also has a membership of over 187,000, made up of volunteers and permanent personnel, however President Buhari refused to sign the law in 2018 after the 8th Assembly forwarded it to him.
Mr. Okolo previously stated that the hopes of Nigerians, particularly young people, would soon be realized. He asked residents of Anambra to sign up with the command because the state had more than 300 openings for individuals looking to join the corps. In addition, Okolo urged the corps’ current employees to report to the state office or local government regions for briefing.
