The Ihiala police divisional headquarters was attacked by several armed men, but police in Onitsha claimed to have thwarted the attempt and recovered an abandoned AK-47 weapon.
The attack was reported to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday by DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra command.
In the early hours of today, our operatives engaged several gunmen who were attacking the Ihiala Police Divisional Headquarters, and we found one abandoned AK-47 rifle, according to Ikenga.
No casualties were reported, but the shooters managed to flee the scene as a result of the police officers’ overwhelming firepower.
Unfortunately, fire had already started spreading throughout the structure as a result of the explosives the shooters put into the police station.
Ikenga gave the assurance that security operations were still in progress and promised to inform the public of any new information.
