Brigadier General Abubakar Haruna, the Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 7 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Sector 1 Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has emphasized the critical significance of cooperative efforts in an effort to strengthen regional security and promote peaceful coexistence. This announcement was made during a historic meeting that took place at the Division’s Headquarters in Maimalari Military Cantonment, Maiduguri, on Thursday, March 28, 2024.

Brigadier General Haruna greeted the team from the Nigerian Fusion Cell on Dialogue and Peace Processes and the Ghanaian Accra Initiative with great warmth during the event. Under the direction of the Coordinator, Honorable Aliyu Ibrahim Gibe, and Executive Secretary Mr. Benedict Dere, the teams set off on a study visit to learn about the creative non-kinetic tactics used by the Nigerian Army to fight transnational crimes and insurgencies.

Speaking about the reason for their visit, Mr. Benedict Dere outlined the goals of the Accra Initiative, which include combating violent extremism and transnational organized crime at member nations’ borders as well as preventing the spread of terrorism from the Sahel region. He conveyed the team’s eagerness to learn from Nigeria’s efficient counterinsurgency tactics in order to duplicate such successful tactics.

Brigadier General Haruna responded by applauding the Accra Initiative’s mandate and highlighting its critical role in improving security in the area. He confirmed that the Nigerian Army is prepared to work closely with the delegation in the context of Operation HADIN KAI. Brigadier General Haruna emphasized the value of an open exchange of experiences and committed the Division to sharing ideas and insights in order to support the Accra Initiative’s broad objectives.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to promoting a safe and stable environment within the Sahel area through group efforts and mutual collaboration as the meeting came to an optimistic conclusion.
