Mangu, Plateau State – In a bid to address security concerns and protect farmlands in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, troops of Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) have taken decisive action, arresting over 1000 cattle and a substantial number of sheep found grazing on local farmlands in Dumunan village, Bwai district of Mangu LGA.
Captain Oya James, the Media Information Officer of Operation Safe Haven, reported that the preliminary investigation revealed that the cattle and sheep had come from neighboring Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas. In response to the situation, the troops have taken the livestock into their custody for necessary action, to prevent further damage to the crops of local farmers.
The area has been grappling with recurring security challenges, with farmlands constantly falling victim to the destruction caused by roaming cattle. This situation has led to tension and conflicts between herders and farmers, resulting in a need for urgent intervention to safeguard lives and property.
Major General AE Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division Nigerian Army, and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN, had previously assured residents of Mangu of the military’s commitment to addressing the root causes of the crisis. The security forces are determined to block any potential triggers that could lead to renewed attacks in the Mangu general area.
The arrest of the cattle and sheep is a significant step towards restoring peace and tranquility to the region. By holding those responsible for illegal grazing accountable, Operation SAFE HAVEN aims to send a strong message that the rule of law and protection of the rights of farmers will be upheld.
