Asaba, Nigeria – In a recent development, troops from the 63 Brigade operating under the 6 Division Nigerian Army successfully destroyed an IPOB/ESN (Indigenous People of Biafra/Eastern Security Network) enclave located in a forested high ground in Asaba on Saturday, 22 July 2023.

According to Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, following the destruction of the enclave, the troops continued their pursuit of the fleeing IPOB fighters. During the ongoing pursuit, the soldiers managed to capture one wounded fighter and also recovered a significant cache of arms and other items belonging to the criminals.

Among the items recovered were four motorcycles, four double-barrel guns, five AK 47 magazines, and 18 rounds of live 7.62mm special ammunition. In addition, the troops found six mobile phones, two power banks, six Boafeng communication radios, chargers, an Android phone, and an HP laptop. Furthermore, 13 IPOB flags, one power generating set, one gas cylinder, IPOB uniforms and accoutrements, and five improvised beagles were seized.

The troops also discovered two ATM cards and a wristwatch in the possession of the fleeing fighters, further implicating them in their illicit activities.

The successful operation in Asaba demonstrates the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to maintaining security and peace in the region. The destruction of the IPOB/ESN enclave and the capture of a wounded fighter, along with the recovery of firearms and other incriminating items, is a significant blow to the secessionist group’s activities.

The Nigerian Army remains resolute in its determination to neutralize threats posed by criminal elements and ensure the safety and wellbeing of citizens across the nation. Such decisive actions against armed groups are crucial in restoring law and order and promoting stability in the affected areas.
