Major General Waidi Shaibu, the General Officer Commanding 7 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Sector 1 of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), has charged members of the General Court Martial (GCM) to uphold justice and fair hearing to ensure that no innocent person is convicted while also ensuring that the guilty are sufficiently punished. This charge was made on November 3, 2022.
The GOC made this known during the opening of the 7 Division General Court Martial (GCM), which was established to hear cases of alleged professional misconduct by members of the troops. He continued by saying that judges should carry out their duties with diligence and without fear, favour, or attachment.
The GOC further urged the court to conduct and resolve the proceedings in accordance with international best practices and without undue delay, emphasizing that “justice delayed is justice denied.”
In his opening remarks, Brigadier General RL Pam, the court president, gave the convening authority the assurance that the court would be impartial toward all parties, follow the principles of justice and equity, and apply the rule of law within the bounds of its authority.
Members of the court, the prosecuting and defence councils, principal staff officers, accused personnel, officers, and men of OPHK all attended the smooth event.
