The Executive Governor of Sokoto State, His Excellency Right Honourable Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has iterated his commitment to continue supporting the Nigerian Army (NA) to end banditry in the Northwest. He made the statement during the 8 Division West African Social Activities ( WASA) 2022, held at 26 Battalion parade ground Giginya Barracks Sokoto on Saturday 11 February 2023.
The Governo was represented by the secretary to the Sokoto State government, Alhaji Mohammad Mainasara Ahmad. He stated that despite NA commitments on various operations to stabilised the nation, the NA is still sustaining its regimentation by conducting WASA annually. He said for this effort there is need for special commendation to all troops. He added that in recent time Sokoto State has witnessed relative peace that facilitated the progress in socio- economic and social activities.
The Governor further stated that, the Sokoto State Government will support the NA with logistic, funds and other necessary requirements to execute their operations. He therefore, urges the NA to intensify operations to clear the remnants of bandits hibernating in the forest.
In his welcome remarks the General Officer Commanding 8 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Joint Task Force Northwes Operation HADARIN DAJI Major General Godwin Mutkut charged troops to remain focused in the conduct of various operations. Soldiers and their families welfare remained his priority, therefore all hands must be on deck to deal with any criminals who wants to disrupt peace in his Area of Operation, he stressed. He ensured the people of Sokoto and the Northwest for his commitment to intensify operations against banditry. He therefore thanks the Chief of Army Staff for his support since he assumed duty. He use the occassion to honoured Soldiers of various formations and units who distinguished themselves within the period under review by presenting award of honour to them.
Highligh of the event was cultural dance by ethnic groups in the Barracks, presentation of awards to deserving soldiers, inspection of various fromations and units stand, beating of the retreat, lightning of the camp fire among others.
