On Sunday, Babagana Umara Zulum, the governor of Borno State, attended Bura Cultural Day in the Marama neighborhood of Hawul Local Government in Borno’s southern region. The Emir of Biu leads the huge Babur-Bura ethnic group’s Sons and Daughters, who have gathered in Marama town every January 1 for the cultural day since 2002.

Governor Zulum attended the festivities on January 1st, 2020, before appointing various development projects in the Hawul Local Government Area. The Government Secondary School in Marama hosted this year’s (2023) culture day, which was organized by the “Marama Community Development Association,” a local non-profit. Governor Zulum praised the planners for their choice of subject.

“I’m glad to say that the topic for today, “Effects of Alien Civilization on Bura Culture,” is highly appropriate. As a result, I applaud the event’s organizers. Zulum remarked, “It is a privilege for me to be here for the second time, to celebrate with Babur-Bura on this extremely significant day.

Zulum urged the community to preserve its unique heritage while assuring them of his continuing support. Zulum stated that “the Borno State government will continue to assist the Marama Development Association.”

“It is really important for all of us to keep our cultures; we should not let modernization wash our culture away,” he continued. It is really wonderful to all of us to see the cultural performances on exhibit here.

Alh. Dr. Mai Mustapha Umar Mustapha II, the Emir of Biu and grand patron of the Marama Community Development Association, praised the Governor for the multiple development initiatives in Bura territory.
The governor’s efforts to restore calm in Borno State were praised by the monarch as well.

Both the Chairman of the Event, Senator Ahmed Isa Hassan Barta, and the Chairman of Marama Community Development Association, Mr. Samuel S. Bwala, thanked the Governor for personally visiting the Bura Cultural Day in their respective speeches. Inuwa Bwala, the chairman of Hawul, led Zulum and his delegation through the exhibit’s cultural artifacts.

During the occasion, five Sons of Bura Land received awards for achievement. Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, a former chief of the army staff, Chairman of the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee Muktari Aliyu Betara, Engineer Alex H. Mahelia, Professor Samson Duna, Engineer Barka Joda Sajou, and Engineer Hyelampa Ngadda received posthumous recognition.
Umar Usman Kadafur, the deputy governor, Mohammed Ali Ndume, the senator representing Borno South, Ali Bukar Dalori, the state’s APC chairman, Haruna Mshelia, and Ahmed Usman Jaha, members of the house of representatives, former deputy governors, members of the state assembly, and other officials and politicians were present.

Other emirs included Alh. Dr. Mai Mustapha Umar Mustapha II of Biu, Alh. Mohammad Nasir Mailafiya of Shani, Alh. Dr. Abdullahi Isa Dasong of Shelleng, and the Emir of Guyuk, who was effectively represented.
