To improve the abilities and competencies of its employees, the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) has successfully completed a three-day capacity-building workshop. The purpose of the training, which took place in the AG Okunola Hall on the College campus from January 28 to 30, 2025, was to enhance operational readiness, professionalism, and teamwork in advance of AWCN Course 9/2025.
Major General Umar Mohammed Alkali, the Commandant of AWCN, announced the training’s opening, reinforcing the College’s dedication to ongoing staff development, according to a statement released by Major Hashimu Abdullahi, the College Public Relations Officer. “To consolidate the transformation of the Nigerian Army towards bequeathing a well-motivated and combat-ready force that can effectively discharge its constitutional responsibilities within a joint and multi-agency environment,” he said, highlighting the initiative’s alignment with the Chief of Army Staff’s command philosophy.
Speaking to the attendees, Major General Alkali encouraged them to use the newfound knowledge to increase their productivity. “I expect all of the College’s staff to demonstrate the highest level of professionalism in carrying out their various responsibilities in order to achieve the College’s command philosophy, which is ‘Consolidate AWCN as a Professional Military Education Center of Excellence,'” he said. Additionally, he praised the organizing team and Brigadier General Osamade Odigie, the Deputy Commandant and Director of Studies, for their commitment to the program’s success.
Regimentation and Discipline, Security Awareness Procedures, Engagement with Participants, Protocol and Courtesy, Conduct During College Events, Investigation and Interrogation Procedures, and Staff Duties and Responsibilities were all covered in the training’s theoretical and practical sessions. Among the practical exercises were: Facility Management, Corporate Event Planning, Cataloguing Library Resources, Hygiene, Protocol Issues, Facilities Maintenance, and Introduction to Food Costing and Portion Control. These trainings were intended to give employees the fundamental logistical and administrative abilities needed for the College to run smoothly.
Brigadier General Osamade Odigie, the Director of Studies and Deputy Commandant, praised the participants for their dedication and active participation during the training during the concluding ceremony. He underlined how important it is to use the knowledge they have gained to improve their performance.
“This training was not just an academic exercise but a crucial investment in our collective efficiency and effectiveness,” he said. “As employees of this prestigious university, you are essential to making sure that our programs are delivered smoothly. In addition to influencing the AWCN Course 9/2025 participants’ experience, your professionalism, self-control, and flexibility will have a big impact on the accomplishment of all college-related endeavors.”
Brigadier General Odigie also emphasized the need of ongoing teamwork and self-improvement, calling on employees to uphold high service standards. In order to maintain the College’s standing as a top provider of professional military training, he continued, “I urge you all to assume responsibility for your duties and cooperate with one another.”
The senior officers in attendance included Brigadier General AM Dikko, Director of War and Strategy; Brigadier General JN Garba, Director of Administration and Logistics; Brigadier General AU Abdul, Director of Coordination; Brigadier General IB Buhari, Director of Research, Development, and Linkages; and Colonel MS Bappaya, Director of Curriculum Development.
In keeping with the Nigerian Army’s larger transformation objective, the training demonstrates AWCN’s dedication to provide professional military education of the highest caliber and its continuous efforts to build institutional capability.
