Ismaila Yusuf Atumeyi, a candidate for the Kogi State House of Assembly, was taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday. He was found in possession of large sums of cash that were likely obtained through bank fraud.
On the New Nigeria Peoples Party’s platform, Atumeyi is running for office in Kogi’s Ankpa 11 district. He was detained with N326,000,000 and $140,500 in cash.
Atumeyi and Joshua Dominic, a man accused of being a serial fraudster, were both apprehended on Sunday in a sting operation at Macedonia Street, Queens Estate, Karsana, Gwarinpa, Abuja, according to a statement from EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren on Tuesday.
Former bank employee Abdumalik Salau Femi was also detained; he is accused of providing insider information that enabled the syndicate to assault the bank. Also found were luxury automobiles.
