A Nigerian contingent comprising two officers and 82 soldiers who were deployed as part of the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea Bissau has successfully returned to Nigeria upon the completion of their tour of duty. The troops arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at exactly 11:25 pm local time on Monday, 10 July 2023, marking the end of their mission.

The safe safe return of the Nigerian contingent is a testament to their dedication and professionalism while serving in Guinea Bissau. They have contributed significantly to the peace and stability of the region and have represented Nigeria admirably as part of the ECOWAS peacekeeping efforts.

Simultaneously, another group of Nigerian troops consisting of nine officers and 77 soldiers departed from the same airport on the same day at around 08:13 am. These troops will be replacing their colleagues in Guinea Bissau to continue the mission of supporting peace and stability in the country.

The deployment of a stabilization force to Guinea Bissau by the bloc of West African nations was prompted by a coup attempt that occurred in February, causing political unrest and instability in the country. The ECOWAS mission aims to restore stability, support the legitimate government, and help maintain peace and security.

Nigeria’s participation in the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission underscores its commitment to regional peacekeeping efforts and its role as a key contributor to stability in West Africa. The Nigerian Armed Forces have a long-standing tradition of excellence in peacekeeping operations, and their involvement in Guinea Bissau exemplifies this commitment.

The safe return of the Nigerian troops is a cause for celebration as they have fulfilled their mandate with professionalism and dedication. Their presence in Guinea Bissau has made a positive impact, providing support to the government and assisting in the restoration of peace and security.

The Nigerian government and the armed forces continue to prioritize regional cooperation and collaboration in addressing security challenges. Nigeria remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the values of peace, security, and cooperation within the ECOWAS community, as it strives to contribute to a more stable and prosperous West Africa.
