In order to increase the Nigerian Correctional Service ‘s (NCoS) ability to provide safe, secure, and humane care of criminals, the NCoS is working with the UNODC. This aims to effectively rehabilitate and reintegrate criminals, particularly the violent extremist offenders (VEOs) in Nigeria’s North Eastern states. Today in Abuja, this was on the agenda of the Project Planning Meeting, which included officers, men, and UNODC representatives.
In a statement sent to journalists at the National headquarters in Abuja, Assistant Controller of Corrections Abubakar Danlami Umar, the national public relations officer, said this.
The Deputy Controller General Nigerian Correctional Service in the Directorate of Inmates’ Training and Productivity (ITP), Emilia Oputa, spoke on behalf of the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, and listed the advantages of the current partnership with UNODC, including, among other things, improving vocational and skills acquisition facilities, staff training and retraining, as well as improving the health and sanitation of inmates in the chosen custodial facilities.
In her remarks, Ms. Melissa Omene, the National Project Officer for UNODC in Nigeria, stated that the meeting’s goals were to evaluate the previous year’s operations and to map out a course for the years 2023 and beyond. She took her time to list all of the achievements for 2022.
The top echelon of the Nigerian Correctional Service, including DCGs, ACGs, CCs, and Controllers of Corrections from Gombe and Adamawa states, attended the meeting.
